If you’re planning to work, study, start a business, or sponsor a family member in the UAE, document attestation is one of the most important legal procedures you’ll need to complete. It’s the process that verifies your documents — like educational certificates, marriage or birth certificates, and commercial papers — so that they are officially recognized by UAE authorities.
Proper document attestation ensures your certificates are legally recognized in the UAE. It validates authenticity, builds trust with government and private institutions, and is mandatory for employment, visa processing, education, business setup, and other official procedures.

Step-by-Step Process of Document Attestation in the UAE
-
Notarization (Home Country) – Get your document notarized by a notary public or local authority to confirm its authenticity.
-
Home Department / Ministry Attestation – Educational documents by the Ministry of Education, personal documents by the Home Department or Ministry of Home Affairs, and commercial documents by the Chamber of Commerce.
-
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) – The MEA verifies all previous attestations and confirms the document’s authenticity for international use.
-
UAE Embassy Attestation (Home Country) – The UAE Embassy or Consulate authenticates the document.
- MOFA Attestation (UAE) – Final attestation in the UAE makes the document officially valid for employment, visa, education, business, or legal use.
Here’s a complete step-by-step guide to how the attestation process works
Step-by-Step Process of Document Attestation in the UAE
1. Notarization in the Country of Origin
Before anything else, the document must be notarized in the country where it was issued. This is usually done by a notary public or local authority to confirm that the document is genuine and legally valid.
Examples:
Degree certificates must be attested by the education board or university.
Marriage or birth certificates must be certified by the local registrar.
2. Home Ministry or Relevant Department Attestation
After notarization, the document must be authenticated by the home department (or the relevant state/central ministry) of the issuing country.
- Educational documents → Ministry of Education or equivalent authority.
- Personal documents → Home Department or Ministry of Home Affairs.
- Commercial documents → Chamber of Commerce or Ministry of Commerce.
3. Attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the Home Country
Next, the document needs to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or its equivalent) in the country where it was issued. This confirms that the document has been properly verified by local authorities and is ready for embassy attestation.
4. UAE Embassy Attestation in the Home Country
Once the document has gone through the local attestation stages, it must be attested by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the issuing country.
This is a crucial step because UAE authorities require embassy legalization before the document can be used in the UAE.
As of 2025, note that UAE embassy attestation should not be older than 10 years for certain applications (like work permits or residence visas).
5. MOFA Attestation in the UAE
The final step is attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the UAE. This is done after the document arrives in the UAE and confirms that it is now officially recognized for use within the country.
Once MOFA attestation is completed, your document becomes legally valid for all official purposes — including employment, visa processing, university admissions, company setup, and court matters.
Don’t let document attestation slow down your business/Professional growth.
